Mr. Cluett's underlying problem, what in effect has driven his involvement in criminal activity for some years as reflected in his criminal record, is one of substance abuse. He has been battling with drug addiction for many years. That, unfortunately, is not particularly unusual. What is unusual is the following. Application for release pending appeals from convictions arising from two trials. In one, the appellant was convicted of multiple prostitution-related and sexual offences and sentenced to 17 years’ imprisonment. In the other, he was convicted of attempting to obstruct justice and breaching a court order and sentenced to a further three years’ imprisonment.
